What Christian Song Expresses Your Love for God?

I have always been a passionate person expressing myself the best through music. God gifted me with a passion to feel music in my soul and to express myself best that way. I can find a song anywhere of some sort to express my heart and my feelings and sometimes to speak to others. While I love this question here my immediate reply in my head was only one song. There are so many out there that it is hard for me to just pick one, but for the sake of this blog I will try and maybe return to the question another time. I am going to say it has to be my favorite Christian song of all time entitled Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. This song was brought into my life believe it or not while watching a movie. It was a Janette Oke movie based on a book series. The movie was entitled Love Comes Softly. The man in the movie was a strong Christian whose life influenced a young woman who had lost her husband. She was not a believer and his example brought her to Christ. In the movie he went out to his private area outdoors to commune with God as he always did. He had a bench set up in the middle of the property overlooking beautiful scenery. He sat on that bench and began speaking to the Lord. He then began to sing the song, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. He raised his voice and sung boldly to the Lord in his private time with God in nature. It is a scene that has stuck with me for years. While he was communing with God this unbelieving woman stood behind him unbeknownst to him that he was being watched and listened to. This was one of the ways she was inspired by him for she had never seen such a man so devoted to His maker. It brought her curiosity up. It inspired me and helped me realize that you never know who is watching your life and how you live. You never know whom you can inspire by your love for Christ. But oh that song! When he sung that in nature, raised hands, eyes looked up to the sky it was indeed a strong kindred spirit for me. I saw this man in the movie passionate and had a heart of worship such as I. The way he expressed himself reminded me of how I feel towards the Lord and that there are other people out there that have that strong connection through song like I have. As I listened to the words, they resonated strongly in my spirit. Over 15 years ago in a previous blog I took every sentence in that song and explained the meaning. Unfortunately in a moment of weakness and after going through a dark time in my life, I deleted the blog and never kept anything I had expressed. So for now I will post the lyrics and allow the reader to determine its meaning for them.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Come Thou fount of every blessingTune my heart to sing Thy graceStreams of mercy never ceasingCall for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnetSung by flaming tongues abovePraise the mount, I'm fixed upon itMount of Thy redeeming love
Here I raise my EbenezerHere by Thy great help I've comeAnd I hope by Thy good pleasureSafely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a strangerWandering from the fold of GodHe to rescue me from dangerInterposed His precious blood(Precious blood)
Oh, that day when freed from sinningI shall see Thy lovely faceClothed then in blood washed linenHow I'll sing Thy sovereign grace
Come my Lord, no longer tarryTake my ransomed soul awaySend Thine angels now to carryMe to realms of endless days
Oh, to grace how great a debtorDaily I'm constrained to beLet Thy goodness like a fetterBind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord I feel itProne to leave the God I loveHere's my heart, oh take and seal itSeal it for Thy courts above
Here's my heartOh take and seal itSeal it for Thy courts above

When Do You Feel Closest to God?

I feel closest to God when I am doing my best to walk in obedience to Him. I feel closest to Him when I spend time in prayer and the Word. A while back I was able to buy some fake candles that have color change on them and you can program them to a particular color or you can have them rotate colors. I like to have those on in the quietness of my bedroom and just enjoy the presence of the Lord. It is how I do my prayer time and how I reflect on His goodness in my life. It is quiet and peaceful. It is my special time with the Lord without any distractions. I also enjoy time in the Word, whether it be a full bible study, or a devotion, or bible journaling and verse mapping. His Word speaks to me and one of the ways I feel closest to God. So many things in life are tugging at us and distracting us away from God and pushing us more toward worldliness. The bible specifically says you cannot love the world and love God at the same time. You cannot put God first and hold on to worldliness. He must come before all things and all people. If we are living a selfish life trying to please ourselves then we cannot feel close to God. Sin gets in the way. When I am not feeling close to God I try to examine my heart to see if there is any unconfessed sin in my life. We all sin every single day. The key is to recognize it and repent from it so we can have and feel that closeness with God. Being close to God is very important to me. Life has no meaning without it. When I keep my focus on Him I feel closest to Him. The minute I allow life to become my focus it puts a setback in the closeness I feel when I am in obedience to Him. It's all about choices. It is a lifetime of repentance. It is a daily walk with Him turning away from the world and embracing who He is. It is a walk of grace and perseverance to stay close to God.

Which Bible Character Do You Relate To The Most?

I have always related to King David the most. He was a man after God's own heart. He had a heart of worship which is something I am passionate about. God chose David to do great and mighty things because of his love for the Lord. God saw his passionate heart. What is interesting to me and what I can relate to is the fact that David committed some grievous sins against the LORD. Yet God still used him mightily. David's life reflects how a man after God's own heart can stumble; much like we all do. David's heart was shown toward God in a profound way because he recognized his sins against God. He displayed true repentance and was a true example of that. God never labeled David as hopeless. It gives me courage to see myself as God sees me. Even when I sin God doesn't see me as hopeless nor does He give up on me. Just like David, God forgives me as I repent. Just like David one can have the greatest heart toward God and still fall. Just like David God can use the vilest of sinners and bring restoration after true repentance. David taught me a true example of repentance. David cried out to God because of his passionate love for God and his heart of worship. This man who committed adultery and murder was chosen by God to fulfill a covenant and would have a lineage from which Jesus was born. David's main strength was his reliance on God. I find myself relying on God more and more in my life because it is God's strength that keeps me going and keeps me relying on Him for every aspect of my life. David's example gives me hope and I am encouraged by such a godly man.

Reflections

Having a spiritual walk with Jesus is key to my life. I am always trying to find ways to enhance my spiritual walk and find ways to grow closer to the One who granted me faith to believe and and teaches me daily my extreme need of Him. I have always loved to journal or blog and I thought I would begin this blog with one spiritual prompt each day to reflect on. I may or may not share. Some may come across this blog by accident. Perhaps it is for my own personal reflection to help me to grow in Christ. Most importantly God sees. He knows. He is El Roi. Let my journey begin.
